Tagum holds 2nd Year of Flores de Tagumeños, Santacruzan -A Great Success!

(News Image)
Awakening its big role in promoting cultural heritage and tradition, the City Government of Tagum led by the religious-oriented City Mayor of Tagum Hon. Rey T. Uy, through the City of Tagum Tourism Council chaired by the enthusiastic Madam Alma Uy, in partnership with Tagum’s Parishes in the Diocese under the watch of His Excellency Bishop Wilfredo D. Manlapaz, DD, STD, the religious tradition of celebrating Santacruzan has been revived to instill values and religious awareness among Tagumeños.

2010 Santacruzan is the 2nd Year celebration of Flores de Tagumeños in a grander and more attractive ceremony featuring the best of Philippine fiestas in honor of Mama Mary on May 29, 2010 with a High Holy Mass in consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Santacruzan is a religious-historical ceremony held in many cities, towns and even small villages throughout the Philippines during the month of May. It is one of the most colorful May-time festivals in the Philippines which depicts the finding of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. Many movie and television personalities participate in the events and are featured as major sagalas and escorts.  Flores, from Spanish flores or "flowers," also known as Flores de Mayo (flowers of May), Flores de Maria (flowers of Mary) or alay (offering), may refer to the whole Flower Festival celebrated in the month of May in honor of the Virgin Mary.

In favor of its people’s religious appreciation, the unity among the church and state is very evident in the celebration of Flores de Mayo on May 29 at the open field of Rotary Park, Tagum City, as Madam Alma Uy said, “we are not only concern of our infrastructure development, but also of our people’s consciousness geared towards faith, morality and cultural tradition”.

The grand Santacruzan is also the convergence of the Best Fashion Designers in Davao City and Tagum City with twenty-six (26) Sagalas representing the different virtues reflecting the character of Blessed Virgin Mary.

In recognition of the participating Fashion Czars of Davao City, they are; Kasuotan, Style Altamoda, Chardin Fashion House, Knots Forever, BARO, Ezzeya Fashion House, Renaissance Haute Couture, Hasegawa Unlimited Fashion House, Don’s Creations, Dionesio in Style, Raquel’s Apparel Shop, Harold Cabrera Fashion, Forever Yours La Bamba fashion de Atelier and Garimon Roferos Haute Couture. The participating Fashion Designers of Tagum City are; Professionalle Fashion Design, Beauty and Wedding Concepts and Red Carpet Fashion Couture.

The twenty-six (26) Sagalas in their beautiful and colorful costumes are; Emerald Uy (Reina Banderda), Tangerine Dream Suarez (Reina Mora), Maritess Ricardo (Reina Fe), Kristina Camille Grandea (Reina Esperanza), Divi Anne Alcontin (Reina Caridad), Sweet Lani Grace Libres (Reina Abogada), Lutchie Orang (Reina Sentenciada), Stela Marie Mendiano (Reina Justica), Maria Niña Canda (Reina Judith), Johanna angel Quinio (Reina Sheba), Fean Briz (Reina Esther), Minette Lindz Maloles (Reina Samaritana), Yvonnie Lauganas (Reina Veronica), Rae Jezrel Bajado (Mary of Magdala), Emelie Cadenas (Mary, Mother of Christ), Katreena Galang (Mary, Mother of James), Kimberly Gaje (Reina Divina Pastora), Zerene Villanueva (Reina De Las Estrellas), Mary Gay Pono (Reina Rosa Mystica), Princess Avanne Petallana (Reina Paz), Katherine Arboso (Reina De Las Propetas), Febbie Amor Silvallana (Reina Del Cielo), Queen Kristelle Albano (Reina De Las Virgines), Charllot Garbo (Reina De Las Flores), Kristina Mari Raymundo (Reina Elena) and Maria Lilibeth Millan (Reina Emperatriz). All Sagalas come from the twenty-three (23) Barangays in Tagum City who represent the “Gagmay'ng Kristohanong Katilingban” (GKK) or commonly known as Basic Ecclesial Community.

We have learned, experienced and will forever treasure this religious celebration as we see it as an opportunity to hand down to younger generation our rich religious heritage of Santacruzan that our ancestors have passed on through the years.
