The City Tourism Council with
the City Government of Tagum in its aim of making Tagum a City
of Festivals, embarked its second major festival in the city after
the Musikahan last February. This was dubbed as the 'Tagum City
Summer Sports Festival 2007' which was slated last May 23-27,
2007.
The packed-full challenging events were Wall
Climbing, Beach Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, SepakTakraw, Table
Tennis, Badminton, Dart, Boxing, Taekwondo, Circuit Racing,
Airsoft Competition, 6 Hour Relay Marathon, Chess, Dama, Adventure
Race, Dog Show, and 3-0n-3 Streetball Challenge.
Despite the hassle-dazzle effect of the synchronized
national and local elections, this Summer Sports Festival was
successfully launched. It kicked-off with a motorcade and symbolic
torch lighting by the proud Tagumeño athletes who are
also active national players. According to Mrs. Alma L. Uy,
Chairperson of the City of Tagum Tourism Council, the limitations
and prohibitions due to election ban was never a hinder in the
conduct of this sports-tourism festival with 17 major events.
She cited that it was because of the collaborated efforts of
the different sports organizations recognized by the city government.
She added that there was an overwhelming turn-out
of participation of which most of the participating teams were
coming from the different localities within the region, the
neighboring regions and there were also coming from Cebu City,
Cagayan de Oro City, Ozamis City, and Duamaguete City who were
challenged to join the different events who were eager to visit
and experience the Tagum style of sports-tourism.
An added attraction to the sports festival is
the newly built Beach Volleydome at the Rotary Park which the
Philippine Volleyball Federation Secretary-General Otie Camangian
also visited and described as "world class beach volley
court" and which Mayor Rey T. Uy said the only beach volleyball
inland sand court in Asia.
The whole event could not be made possible
without the full support of the City Government of Tagum through
its Engineering Manpower, City Sports, CIPO and Tourism personnel.
