HISTORY OF MAGUGPO POLICE FORCE TO TAGUM CITY POLICE STATION
There is no official record on the meaning of Tagum, but a legend exists how the name Magugpo came about. Magugpo was was described as a vast wilderness, inhabited by the Mansaka, Manguangas, Mandayas and the Kalagans in the coastal barangays. The name magugpo was derived from the native word maog, a name of a certain tree, and ugpo meaning very high.
On June 23, 1941, Commonwelth President Manuel L. Quezon, issued an Executive Order No. 452, creating Magugpo into a regular Municipality. However, Wold War War 2 broke out on the first week of December, 1941, and it lasted when the Japanese army surrendered to the Allies, on September 2, 1945, that brought an end to the World War 2.
In the same year, a locally paid, Magugpo Police Force has been organized, where in Mr. Leopoldo Balasbas, was the first appointed Chief of Police of the wartom municipality of Magugpo. COP Balasbas and his handful members of local police force, has to combat rising criminalities in Magugpo. In 1948, the Magugpo Municipal Council, approved a resolution renaming the municipality of magugpo into Municipality of Tagum. Magugpo police Force was also changed to Tagum Police Department.
In 1975, Tagum Police Department was change to tagum police station, after the integration of the Local Police with the defunct Philippine Constabulary, the Police we paid by the National Government . That time, the police was not only good in combating criminalities but they were actively invoved in civic and sports activities.
In 1991, the Philippine National Police, was created by virtue of the Republic Act, 6975, absorbing all qualified members of the Integrated national Police and Philippine Constabulary, into the Philippine National Police.
In 1998, Tagum Police Station, was changed again to Tagum City Police Station, by virtue of the Republic Act 8472, for the Municipality of Tagum, became the City of Tagum. Tagum City police Station is considered as a prime Police station compared with other Police stations of Davao Province. Basing on its personnel complement, mobility and other existing resources, this police office has lived up to the expectations of the community to be vanguard and protector of peace and order and considered also as a first class City of Province.
For the past years, Tagum City Police station has been a recipient of being the " Best Police Station" region wide for the years 1987, 1991, 1994,1997, and 2000, aside from being regularly adjudged as " Best police Station" province-wide. Such accolades reached its peak when i garnered the much covetedaward when it was chosen as the Municipal Police station of the year" in 1995 from among the more or less 1,560 Police stations in the entire country. Currently, Tagum City Police station, under the leadership of its Chief, olice Superintendent Dario L. Gunabe, with its relentless campaign against criminality and lawlessness coupled with a strong constituents and the visiting public, aims to be the " Best City Police Station" in the region, if not, in the entire country.

To improve the law enforcement services rendered by this office in order to minimized , if not completely eradicate criminal personalities and their illegal activities in the coming days.

To improve the traffic condition of Tagum City by recognizing problem areas and the need for more traffic enforcers and /or through computerization of trffic facility of the city.

To train peacekeepers such as Tanods, CVOs,NGOs, youthdown to the Barangay level.

To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the police force its office and its personnel in general by promoting internal discipline and values formation.

To be able to decentralize and deploy policemen to far-flung areas with the creation of police precincts which will be strategically located within Tagum City .

To improve police to community relations by means of better communication dialogue or pulong-pulong sa Barrangay with police or masa.

To encourage higher education among policemen and promote professionalism in the PNP.
