History…

Musikahan sa Tagum

“Magmusikahan Ta: Investing in Creativity, Pathways to Sustainability”

Calling for all enthusiast music-makers and compositors for the upcoming celebration of the grandiose and a weeklong Music festival of Tagum City on February 21-27 next year 2008.

Reminiscing the moments way back in the year 1999…. when the City Government of Tagum thru the City Tourism Council launched a simple celebration to collaborate their Founding Anniversary last March. The group decided to make music as the centerpiece of the weeklong activity, which they named as Musikahan sa Tagum. It was a weeklong musical event aimed to revive cultural music in the city and lift the people’s awareness to its significance in developing a sense of developing a sense of belonging among the constituency. It also served as the opening salvo for the Mindanao Regional Festival ahead of the Caracoles Festival of the Island Garden City of Samal and the known Kadayawan Festival of Davao City.

Bountiful and copious years had passed for the City of Tagum under the supervision of our sagacious Mayor Rey T. Uy. Many had thought that the idea before of the City Government of Tagum to develop and promote the City into a Music Capital of Region XI was impossible. But Musikahan carved a niche and proved that they are and were wrong. The sumptuous dream became a reality. For the weeklong, sleepless night activities can be associated to a journey commencing towards the fulfillment of that goal.

For years, we have been allured, pacified and overwhelmed by the warmth of our Indigenous Music and Local Musicians. Our Lumad brothers and sisters also joined in the great festival, aiming to recapture the glory of our ancient music makers and at the same time to preserve whatever remained of their identity as a people.

Now, with the joint effort of the Local Government of Tagum and the vigorous Tagum City Council headed by our first Lady of Tagum, Ms. Alma Lim-Uy along with other non-government organizations and the private sectors popped up with new presentations and production. And it is now officially open for the exceptional, marvelous performers and music makers nationwide to participate and join us in this magnificent and superlative weeklong musical competition to be staged on February 21-27 of the year 2008 in Tagum City Freedom Park that will be transformed into a music heartland with huge lighted musical symbols with musical songs, movies and dine.

This musicfest is a distinct cultural event that celebrates the Filipino excellence in music composition, performance and production. It is a must-see festival that will bring you to the top-most of the world, as the performers will generate their talents and skills, and it will be a great start for everybody to meet another bountiful year for us Tagumeños.

With over 3 million of prize up-stake for the nine (9) different music competitions like raprapan, sayawan at kantahan; rondalsayaw (elementary/secondary); choral (children, youth & adult); quintette (open category); lyre and drum and bugle competition (elementary / secondary); marching brass band (open category) harana MTV sa barangay (for Tagum City) only and the battle of the band (adult and children category) that will be rendered by performers nationwide that will surely mesmerize the audiences and captivate their attention.

Hand in hand let us push the development of music industry here in Tagum City. Let us support the Musikahan 2008, as Tagum city is now on it’s peak of success under the leadership of Mayor Rey T Uy.

LOBOC CHILDREN’S CHOIR CELEBRATES WITH US!

Musikahan sa Tagum 2008 is coming your way showcasing different talents and abilities all over the Philippines which will be staged on February 21 up to February 27 of this year that will become the opening salvo of the 10th year-celebration of Tagum as a component city of Davao del Norte on March 7, 2008. And one of the pride of the Filipino who will be celebrating with us here in Tagum City is the Loboc Children’s Choir. Here’s a bit of background of this talented and most-admired children’s choir coming from the island of Visayas, in Bohol to be particular.

The Loboc Children’s Choir (LCC) was founded in 1980. It is composed of schoolchildren ages nine to thirteen from the town of Loboc. From an ordinary school choir established for school and community affairs, it has blossomed into one of the most outstanding choirs in the Philippines today.

The LCC is a three-time National Champion of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) - Children’s Choir Category, the most prestigious music competitions in the Philippines, for 2001, 1995, and 1993.

The Choir has held concerts all over the country as well as in other parts of the world. In July 2004, the group was especially invited by World Vision Korea to represent the Philippines in the World Vision 2004 International Children’s Choir Festival held in Korea. The Choir successfully held concerts in Seoul, Ansung, and Incheon and performed along side children’s choirs from Australia, the U.S.A., Hong Kong, and Korea. With the theme “Imagine a World Where Children Are Safe”, the children of Loboc joined about 600 other children sing a rousing finale that brought forth their message of peace, hope, brotherhood, and love.

One of its memorable projects for 2003 was its partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the leading art museum in the Philippines, which launched an exhibit on the arts and culture of Bohol. The Choir, under the auspices of the Met and of its leaders led by Trustee Bea Zobel Jr. and Executive Director Ino Manalo, regaled the exhibit launch with a special concert, which was followed by a Christmas Concert tour in major business establishments in Makati and Ayala Alabang. This climaxed with a command performance for Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain in a cultural exchange visit to the Philippines. Another memorable project was the highly acclaimed back-to-back concert with the University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA), winner of the prestigious Gran Premio Citta di Arezzo in 2001 during the 49th Concorso Polifonico Internazionale Guido d’Arezzo in Arezzo, Italy. The concert, aptly entitled “An Evening of Heaven’s Music”, was held in line with the Heritage Conservation Program in the Province of Bohol.

In 2000, it represented the country during the International Children's Culture and Arts Festival in Tianjin, China, and held concerts in Beijing and Hong Kong. In 1996, in a concert dubbed, "On Angels' Wings: From Bohol to the World", the choir toured key cities in the United States. It has performed with the World Youth Orchestra during its concerts in Bohol and Cebu in 1999, and the University of Santo Tomas Symphony Orchestra. And as a 'cultural treasure' of the Province, the group often sings for visiting dignitaries, and local and foreign tourists.

A major highlight of the choir's past activities is its 1st European Concert Tour in September to November of 2003. The group represented the Philippines in the 6th International Folksongs Festival "Europe and Its Songs" held in Barcelona, Spain. In this international competition, LCC bagged the Gold Medal (First Prize) of the Youth Category, and was awarded the Festival Cup or the Grand Prize for garnering the highest point average of 97.5, besting the other 12 choirs from all over the world. The Choir also held very successful concerts in The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, and Switzerland. Its concert repertoire is a combination of classical, folk, modern and children's songs.

However, the Loboc Children's Choir is not only heard in concert halls or auditoriums, but in prisons, hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged as well, where its music of hope, love, and joy also find its meaning. It continues to take active part in school, town, and provincial activities.

So what are you waiting for? Come and celebrate with the whole Tagumeños as we proud to shout out all over Mindanao that it’s in Tagum City that the grandest and longest music-festival can be found. (BPD-CIO)

PASIKLABAN: Battle of the Bands’ Extended Elimination

To avoid last minute rush, the City Tourism Office together with the City Investment Promotions Office are doubling their time and effort for the preparation of the fast approaching grandest and longest music festival in Mindanao – dubbed as “Musikahan sa Tagum Festival 2008”.

Musikahan sa Tagum Festival is one of the most awaited music competitions of numerous Tagumeños and its neighboring provinces all over Mindanao, which will be staged on February 21 to 27 this year. Unlike the previous celebrations, City Tourism Council President, Alma Lim-Uy has prepared a lot of new side events for this year like the mini-musikahan in all 23 barangays in the city, which challenges the respective barangays in conceptualizing activities to picture out the incoming festival. She will be visiting all the participating barangay to evaluate their mini-musikahan from February 15 to 20, 2008. And during the meeting with the barangay captains, Mrs. Uy also elaborated the guidelines of the “Biyaheng Musikahan” – a Mindanaw Music Video Competition wherein she challenged the barangay leaders to aim for the best because the prizes at stake are bigger and the difference from the first prize down to third prize are half or more. She also added that there would be no more consolation prizes that make the competition more challenging and tighter. As what she said, “Dili gayod kamo namo pasagdan kay kamo man ang nanguna kadtong mga niaging selebrasyon sa Musikahan” (We will never ignore you because you led the previous Musikahan celebrations). Furthermore, Ms. John Irene del Campo of City Investment Promotions Office o CIPO observed that there are still interested participants from other places who wanted to join in PASIKLABAN: Battle of the Bands. And for that reason, the elimination round last December 2007 is extended on February 8 to 10 this year at the Freedom Park, Tagum City.
