RONDALSAYAW 2009– Mindanao Rondalla and Folk Dance Competition
Musikahan Sa Tagum Festival 2009
February 22, 2009 – 3:00 PM, Tagum Trade and Cultural Center Pavilion, Tagum City, Davao del Norte

Mechanics and Guidelines:

1.The Mindanao Rondalsayaw Competition is an exquisite combination of string ensemble and folk dance competition participated by the different music ensemble and folk dance companies in Mindanao Region.

2.The competition is divided into three (3) categories: Children Category (ages 7 to 12 years old); Youth Category (ages 13 to 21 years old) and Adult Category (ages 50 years old and above).

3.Each participating group is required to have a complete set of team which compose of rondalla ensemble and folk dance troupe. The set composition is either belongs to one school or a composite of members from other school so long as it belongs to the exact category aim to participate.

4.Required participants for the rondalla ensemble per category are as follows:
a. children/youth category – 20 to 25 participants
b. adult category – 10 to 15 participants

5.Required participants for the folk dance troupe per category are as follows:
a. children/youth category - minimum of 4 pairs - maximum of 8 pairs
b. adult category - minimum of 4 pairs – maximum of 8 pairs

6.Each rondalla ensemble for both three (3) categories shall perform 4 musical pieces for competition, two (2) of which shall be interpreted in folk dance and the rest shall be in musical play presentation.

7.The time limit given to each participant shall not exceed to 25 minutes to include entrance and exit.

8.A deduction of 2 points per minute is impose on all entries that exceed the time
limit of performance. The time count starts upon the playing of the first note of the first song.

9.However, another 1 minute extra time is given for each group to set up and strike down the sets, but in excess to the set-up and strike down time allocated, a 2 points deduction shall be imposed.

10.The use of huge sets are allowed but not encouraged in this competition.

11.Huge production sets with dimensions beyond 8 x 8 x 8 feet or that could not be carried by 4 persons are not allowed during the performance. However, the sets shall be checked and certified before 10:00 A.M. on February 22, 2009 by the Event Chairperson or his/her authorized representative. Un-certified sets are not allowed to be displayed or used in the contest.

12.A stage crew or non-performers who shall assist in the set-up are not allowed to enter the performance area during the performances of the 4 musical pieces.

13.The participants shall wear prescribed costumes for the presentation. The rondalla shall wear the traditional formal wear while the dance troupe shall wear the following: Children's dance troupe – Balintawak (girls) and Kamesa de Tsino (boys) while the Youth and Adult dance troupe – Maria Clara (girls) and Barong Tagalog ( boys).

14.Prizes at stake in the competition:
Children's Category: Rondalla Dance
1st Prize 50,000.00 + trophy 30,000.00 + trophy
2nd prize 25,000.00 + certificate 20,000.00 + certificate
3rd prize 15,000.00 + certificate 10,000.00 + certificate
Youth Category: Rondalla Dance
1st Prize 60,000.00 + trophy 30,000.00 + trophy
2nd Prize 30,000.00 + certificate 20,000.00 + certificate
3rd Prize 20,000.00 + certificate 10,000.00 + certificate
Adult Category: Rondalla Dance
1st Prize 30,000.00 + trophy 15,000.00 + trophy
2nd Prize 15,000.00 + certificate 10,000.00 + certificate
3rd Prize 10,000.00 + certificate 5,000.00 + certificate

14. Special Award is given to Best Conductor – P5,000.00 per category.

15. There are two sets of judges in this competition. One set shall judge the dance category and the other set is for the rondalla ensemble presentation. Members of the Board of Judges are known for their achievement and stature in the field of music and dance preferably outside Davao Region.The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable.

16. The official criteria for judging are the following:
Dance Presentation Rondalla Presentation
Choreography - 35% Tonal Quality - 35%
Unity & Precision - 25% Interpretation - 35%
Grace & Expression - 25% Harmony & Balance - 20%
Visual Design - 15% Impact/Deportment - 10%
Total - 100% Total - 100%

17. The competition date shall be on Saturday, February 22, 2009 at 3PM at the Tagum Trade and Cultural
Center Pavilion, Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

18. Application is now available at the City of Tagum Tourism Council Office, Beach Volleydrome,
Rotary Park, Pioneer Avenue, Tagum City.

19. Deadline for the submission of application: December 30, 2008. Application can be
