MUSIKAHAN SA TAGUM 2009 FESTIVAL

RAPRAPAN – GROUP PERFORMANCE
MODERN DANCE COMPETITION

DURATION: Elimination starts on September 13, 2008 and every Saturday thereafter. Semi-finals will be held on January 17, 2009 where at least 12 teams will be chosen for the Grand Finals during the Musikahan Week on February 2009.

PARTICIPANTS: Any Dance Group from any part of Mindanao will be invited to join. Elimination outside Davao del Norte will be held in various cities and schedules will be announced after we have tapped the cooperation of their City Tourism Council offices. Groups outside Davao del Norte and Comval Provinces will be given six slots in the semi-finals in order to boost participation from far flung areas.

CATEGORIES: Junior Level: 7-13 years of age; Senior Level: 14-25 years of age

GENERAL COMPETITION FORMAT AND RULES:

A.No more than 8 persons at a time will be allowed to compete.

B.Teams must perform a dance piece/routine consisting of one or more variations of free-style dances or combination styles. Ballroom, ethnic or any interpretative dances can be an inspiration but music should be modern.

C.Teams are required to perform for a total of 5 minutes inclusive of stage entry and departure.  The performance routine shall comprise actual dancing for a minimum time of 3½ minutes or a maximum of 4 minutes.

D.Each competing team will provide a 'Performance Brief’ and a waiver (Forms will be provided) to the contest coordinator for the judges’ panel, outlining their chosen core dances and the theme of the dance presentation, and the names of the contestants. Identification cards may be required for age verification.    

E.Lifts, drops, aerials or acrobatic moves are allowed. 

 

a. A LIFT shall be described as any move where both feet of one team member are off the floor and the weight is supported by another team member. 
b. A DROP will be described as any move where the head and torso of one team member is entirely below the waist level of another member and their weight is supported by the other member. 
c. An AERIAL will be described as any move where team members independently brings both feet off the floor and one foot is above another team member's shoulder level or both feet are above their waist level. 
d. An ACROBATIC will be described as any move where one team member independently passes his/her foot, leg, or body over and across the plane of another team member's head, or passes his/her body under or through the legs of another team member. 
e. Leans, dips or leverage moves where one team member supports some, but not all of another team member and they are not “lifted” or “dropped”. 
f. Leg lifts or kicks where one team member’s foot rises above the level of other members’ head.

F.Music shall be of the appropriate genre relative to the dance style.
 
G.Music will be played for a maximum of 4 minutes. Music may be faded out anytime after 3½ minutes.

H.While flirtatious moves are acceptable, overt sexual, vulgar or crude dance positions are inappropriate.
 
I.Props are allowed.  Props are defined as small handheld or worn objects that can be appropriately revealed, utilized and retained (e.g. tear-away skirt, fake guns and holsters, hand-held flowers, spurs, parasols, canes, ropes, chairs, suitcases, etc.).  In other words, start with an empty floor, leave with an empty floor. 

J.Contestants will compete in their own choice of style fashions.  Judging of Presentation will take into consideration elements of costuming and style. 

K.Footwear will be the choice of contestants.

L.Universally understood dance floor etiquette should be adhered to at all times during the competition.  Any flagrant infraction of dance floor etiquette (one that causes a collision of team members or one that severely interferes with another team’s performance) may be cause for disqualification of the offending team. 

M.It is the responsibility of the dance team to ensure that their music tape or CD is not defective. No repeat performance will be allowed for a defective tape or CD.

JUDGING AND CRITERIA:
A. A panel of three or five (3 or 5) judges consisting of dance instructors, professional dancers, or dancers with competition experience shall be used.  All judges agree to judge in an impartial manner.  Any conflict of interest shall be reported to and resolve by the contest coordinator.

B. Judging will be done “relative placement system”.  Each judge will issue a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. placement.  Final placement will be determined by absolute majority of placements.  For example, with a panel of five judges, the 1st place winner must have 3, 4 or 5 1st place votes, the number 1st-2nd place votes for each couple is counted.   If no couple has the absolute majority of 1st-2nd place votes, the 1st-3rd place votes are counted and so on until a first place winner is selected.  2nd place is done the same way beginning with counting the number of 2nd place votes and 3rd place the same.

C. Contestants must be ready to perform when schedule and/or called or shall be scored no show with zero (0) placement.

D. Placement will be made based on the following criteria:

a. CONTENT: 30%

 

1 .Variety of dance steps, positions, movements and/or combinations as appropriate to the specific dance style.

2. Difficulty of dance movements and/or combinations from one dance style, position or alignment to another.

3.Uniqueness or originality of dance movements and combinations from one dance position or alignment to another, to include presentation of dance position.

4. Continuity of dance movement and/or combinations to either interpret dance theme and music, or to demonstrate dance control. This refers to exceptional phrasing, which includes spontaneous adjustments of dance pattern for irregularly phrased musical selections.

b. EXECUTION: 40%

 

1. Basic patterns, rhythm, timing and synchronization between team members and to the selected music.

2. Proper performance of footwork, hand, head, arm and body movements through dance variations; to include balance and control through executing movements.

3. Alignment, framework, and proper presentation of dance positions; to include smoothness of follow-through from movement into position; to demonstrate properly initiated lead and follow technique from position into movement.

c. STYLE AND PRESENTATION: 30%

 

1. Artistic interpretation and choreography projected through dance movements as it relates to the selected music, specified dance style (category) and performance theme.

2 .Attentiveness, enthusiasm, enjoyment of the dance and general good team-partnership as perceived through appropriate presentation of lead and follow roles.

3 .Flair and accent of dance movement, generating an atmosphere and instilling a mood appropriate to the specific dance style (category).

4. Co-coordinated appearance appropriate to the competition attire and the specific dance category; posture, grooming and use of costume as it complements the contestants and their projected dance style and theme.
